Prime mover China export map — left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive used truck markets in Africa, 2026

Prime Mover China 2026: Used Tractor Head Buyer’s Guide (4×2 vs 6×4, LHD vs RHD, Prices)

Quick answer: A used prime mover China export in 2026 costs $8,800–$18,500 FOB, or about $15,000–$22,000 CIF Lagos once shipping lands. Buyers in Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda call it a truck head, in East and Southern Africa it is a tractor head, and in Southeast Asia and Australia it is a prime mover. Same truck, three names. You only have three real decisions — 4×2 or 6×4, left-hand or right-hand drive, and the year.

I sell these units from a yard in Shijiazhuang, next to the Tianjin Port gate. In practice, roughly half of the buyers who message us use the phrase “prime mover China” or “truck head” rather than “tractor truck”. So this page answers the question in the words buyers actually search with, and then it gets into the numbers.

What “Prime Mover” Actually Means (Prime Mover = Tractor Head = Truck Head)

First, a prime mover is the powered front unit of an articulated truck. It has a cab, an engine and a fifth-wheel coupling, but no cargo box of its own — so it works only when a semi-trailer is hooked onto it. Indeed, that is exactly what a tractor head is, and what a truck head is. In effect, the only thing that changes between those words is the country you are standing in.

What you call itWhere buyers use that word
Prime moverSoutheast Asia, parts of West Africa, Australia
Tractor head / truck headNigeria, Ghana, Uganda, wider East Africa
Tractor unitUK, South Africa, Southern Africa
Semi-truck / semi-tractorNorth America
Tractor truck (China factory term)What Sinotruk, Shacman and FAW print on the export spec sheet

Also, the word matters more than it sounds. When a Nigerian buyer asks for a “truck head” and a supplier quotes him a “6×4 tractor truck”, both are describing the same machine. Even so, it is worth confirming, because cargo trucks with their own body are also sold as “trucks”, and a buyer who wanted a prime mover can end up paying for the wrong vehicle. Therefore, ask for photos of the fifth wheel. If there is no fifth wheel, it is not a prime mover.

Prime Mover China 2026 — What a Used Unit Costs

In general, most used prime movers leaving China in 2026 land in three price bands. Moreover, the band is decided by year and mileage, not by brand. Similarly, a 2019 HOWO and a 2019 Shacman with the same mileage sit within a few hundred dollars of each other.

TierYearMileagePowerTypical modelsFOB China
Entry2018–2020300,000+ km371–400 hpHOWO 371, Shacman M3000$8,800–$9,500
Mid2019–2021~200,000 km400–430 hpHOWO 371 (2020–21), Shacman M3000S, FAW J6P$12,500–$13,500

Still, across the whole 2026 book, used prime movers run $8,800–$18,500 FOB Tianjin. However, two add-ons change that number in practice. Right-hand-drive units, which Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia need, cost $2,500–$4,000 more, because they are sourced separately or converted at a workshop. Also, here is a landed example: a clean 2019 HOWO 371 6×4 at $12,500–$13,500 FOB plus $2,200–$3,500 RoRo freight to Lagos puts the truck on the quay at roughly $15,000–$17,000 before duty and clearing. Duty and port charges are paid on top, in the destination country.

4×2 or 6×4 — Match the Drive Configuration to Your Route

Choose 6×4 unless you can promise the truck will never leave tarmac. Basically, the extra drive axle is the single feature that keeps a prime mover moving in the West African wet season and on mine access roads. For the same reason, a 6×4 also holds its resale value better than a 4×2 in the same condition.

Left-Hand Drive vs Right-Hand Drive — Which Markets, Which Trucks

In short, drive side decides which truck you can legally register, and it is the mistake that kills the most deals. Meanwhile, most of West and Central Africa drives on the right and takes left-hand-drive prime movers. By contrast, Kenya, Tanzania and the whole southern belt drive on the left and take right-hand-drive only. Consequently, a left-hand-drive HOWO will clear customs in Mombasa and then sit in the yard, unsellable.

Similarly, age rules follow the same map logic, and they change country by country. Meanwhile, Kenya’s 8-year cap is the one buyers hit most often, because it quietly removes older bargain units from the export list. I keep the current country-by-country position in used truck import age limits in Africa rather than repeat numbers here that may already have moved.

Which Brand Makes the Best Used Prime Mover from China?

In fact, HOWO, Shacman and FAW dominate prime mover China exports for one practical reason: parts and mechanics exist almost everywhere. Still, between them the choice is about spare-part availability first and comfort second.

  • HOWO (Sinotruk) — the widest parts network in Africa. A 371 or a T7H can be repaired in almost any town along the Lagos–Kano corridor. As a result, it is the first choice for a first-time buyer. HOWO 371 tractor truck specs.
  • Shacman (Shaanxi) — a heavier, more comfortable cab, and the F3000 and M3000S are the strong value pick in the mid tier. Shacman M3000 buyer’s guide.
  • FAW Jiefang — the J6P and J6V give the best power-per-dollar at the top of the range; notably, a 560 hp J6V pulls fuel and cement trailers with less effort. full brand comparison.
  • FOTON Auman GTL — the newest-generation option; a 2022 GTL 440 is a common premium pick when a buyer wants low mileage over brand familiarity.

How to Check a Used Prime Mover Before You Pay

Then check these seven points on live video, in order, before any deposit leaves your account. Specifically, on a prime mover the first four carry most of the risk, because a worn fifth wheel or a cracked frame will not show up in a photo but will cost you a rebuild.

  1. Fifth wheel and kingpin plate — look for a JOST coupling with no cracked plate or welded repair. Then ask what size the kingpin is: 2 inch (50.8 mm) is the standard match for African trailers.
  2. Frame rails — lift the cab, then look down both rails for welds, kinks or fresh paint over rust. A repaired frame cuts the truck’s value by a third.
  3. Cold start — the engine must start from cold, not from an engine already warmed up. Meanwhile, watch for blue smoke and listen for a misfire.
  4. Engine and chassis numbers — photograph both and match them to the documents. A number that does not match is a truck you cannot register.
  5. Mileage and hour meter — cross-check the odometer against tyre and pedal wear. A 2019 unit showing 150,000 km on rough roads is worth a second look.
  6. Tyres and drive axles — on a 6×4, check both rear axles for hub leaks and matching tyre sizes.
  7. Cab and wiring — open the fuse box, test the lights and air conditioning, and look for water damage around the windscreen.

FAQ — Prime Mover Questions Buyers Ask Us

Is a prime mover the same as a tractor head?

Yes. Prime mover, tractor head, truck head, tractor unit and semi-tractor all describe the same powered unit that couples to a semi-trailer. The word changes with the region, not with the machine.

Can I fit a prime mover in a 40HQ container?

No. A 6×4 prime mover is too tall and too wide for a standard 40HQ container’s door opening. They ship on RoRo, flat rack or breakbulk, which is also why freight is quoted per unit rather than per box.

Which is better for Africa, 4×2 or 6×4?

6×4, unless the truck stays on tarmac. The second drive axle roughly doubles your traction in mud and on unsealed roads, and it holds resale value better. 4×2 makes sense only for light, fixed port shuttles.

Can you convert a left-hand-drive prime mover to right-hand drive?

Of course, it can be done at a Chinese workshop for roughly $2,000–$4,000 and 5–10 days per truck. However, factory right-hand-drive units are the safer route if you are selling into Kenya, Tanzania or Zambia, because converted steering is a structural change that must match the export documents exactly.

What deposit and payment terms are normal?

Generally, 30% deposit locks the unit, with the balance against a copy of the bill of lading, or a letter of credit for larger orders. Full detail on the safe options is here: how to pay for used trucks from China.

How long does it take from payment to my port?

First, allow 7–14 days for inspection, payment and loading. After that, add 25–35 days of RoRo sailing to Lagos, Tema or Mombasa, and roughly 30–45 days for Durban or Jebel Ali. Overall, budget six to eight weeks door to quay.

Shipping a Prime Mover from China to Africa and the Middle East

In practice, a prime mover China order ships on RoRo or on a flat rack, never in a sealed container, so plan the freight line separately from the truck price. Also, we load from Tianjin, and currently the RoRo sailing to Lagos runs 25–35 days.

How We Sell Prime Movers from Our Shijiazhuang Yard

Overall, we run a small export operation, not a marketplace, so every prime mover we quote is a unit we have walked around ourselves. Therefore, send the country, the port and your budget band, and we reply with the current stock list, live video of each unit, and an FOB plus CIF number for your port. If your market needs right-hand drive, say so in the first message — it changes what we quote.

Also, two things make this easier. First, the full buyer’s guide to used tractor trucks from China covers brands, specs and paperwork in one place. Second, the complete Africa buyer’s guide walks through a real buyer’s order from enquiry to delivery. Still, read either one before you commit money, or send us the question directly and we will answer it in writing.
