The 30-Point Used Truck Inspection Checklist
Engine — Points 1-5
- First, cold start: the engine must start within a few seconds. Heavy cranking means weak compression or a bad starter.
- Idle stability: after 2 minutes, idle should be steady with no hunting or stalling.
- Exhaust smoke: blue = burning oil, white = coolant in combustion, thick black = over-fuelling. Light grey on cold start is normal.
- Oil check: dipstick level, color and smell. Milky oil = coolant contamination. Burnt smell = overdue service.
- Leaks: run the engine for 10 minutes, then look underneath for oil, fuel or coolant drips.
Transmission & Drivetrain — Points 6-9
- Next, all gears: engage every gear including reverse and low range. Grinding = syncro or clutch issues.
- Clutch: pedal feel and travel; clutch should not slip in a higher gear under load.
- Gearbox oil: level and color on the dipstick/plug — black or metallic = internal wear.
- Drivetrain noise: listen for whine from differential or vibration from the drive shaft while driving.
Brakes & Steering — Points 10-13
- Then, air pressure build: for air-brake trucks, pressure must build within normal time and hold when the engine is off.
- Brake linings: measure pad/drum thickness, do not just look at them.
