FOTON ES7 dump truck ready for export from China to Africa

Used FOTON Trucks for Africa: Complete 2026 Buyer’s Guide — Dump, Tractor & Cargo

A customer from Ghana called me last month. He runs a small logistics company in Kumasi — three trucks, all aging. He needed something reliable for the Accra–Kumasi route but couldn't afford another HOWO.

I sent him videos of a 2018 FOTON Auman GTL 6×4 tractor head. White cab, Cumminss ISG engine, 280,000 km. He looked at it for a week. Then he asked the question I hear all the time: "Is FOTON as good as HOWO?"

Honest answer? No. But it doesn't need to be. What FOTON offers is different — a Cumminss-powered truck that costs less than a HOWO, with a cab that's actually comfortable on long hauls. For a lot of buyers, that trade-off makes perfect sense.

He bought it. Truck arrived in Tema, cleared customs, and went straight to work. That was three months ago. He messaged me last week to say the drivers prefer it over the HOWO because the cabin is quieter and the air conditioning actually works.

Here's what I've learned about FOTON trucks after years of selling, inspecting, and shipping them.

Why Bother With FOTON?

Most African buyers know HOWO. They know Shacman. FOTON is the third option that doesn't get enough attention. Here's why it should:

Cummins engines. This is the big one. Most FOTON Auman trucks use Cumminss ISB, ISD, or ISLe engines built under license in China. You know what that means — when something breaks, you can find Cumminss parts in Lagos, Nairobi, Accra, or Johannesburg. You're not ordering from a factory in rural Shandong and waiting three weeks.

Price. It's genuinely cheaper. A used FOTON Auman GTL costs 10–15% less than the equivalent HOWO or Shacman. Same payload capacity. Same Cumminss engine. Less money. The difference is real — we're talking $2,000–$4,000 per truck.

Better cab. I'm not kidding. FOTON's Auman GTL and EST cabs are genuinely nicer to sit in than a HOWO. Air suspension seats, better sound insulation, a cab that tilts forward so you can actually reach the engine. Drivers notice. If you run a fleet and your drivers are happy, that matters.

Light trucks too. FOTON makes good medium-duty trucks — the Forland and Ollin series. 4×2, Cumminss ISF engines, 4.2m to 6.8m cargo beds. Popular for urban delivery and water transport across Africa.

The FOTON Lineup — What's Worth Buying

Auman EST (Super Truck)

Auman GTL

The most common FOTON export to Africa. In production since 2015, so there's a good supply on the used market.

  • Engine: Cumminss ISG or ISLe (280–400 HP)

  • Payload: 25–45 tons
  • CIF Lagos/Mombasa: $15,000–$25,000

Forland / Ollin Light Truck

These don't get talked about much but they're solid little trucks. Cumminss ISF 2.8L or 3.8L engines.

  • Engine: Cumminss ISF (130–170 HP)
  • Cargo bed: 4.2m–6.8m
  • CIF Lagos/Mombasa: $8,000–$14,000

FOTON vs HOWO vs Shacman — Honest Comparison

Factor FOTON Auman HOWO Shacman
Engine Cumminss (licensed) Sinotruk own Weichai / Cumminss
Parts in Africa Growing Excellent Good
Cab comfort Very good Average Above average
Resale value Improving High High
Used price Lower Mid Mid

FOTON's advantage is clear: Cumminss power at a lower price. The trade-off? Parts availability isn't as good as HOWO yet — though it's improving fast in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya.

What I Check on Every FOTON Before Shipping

These are not hypothetical. I've seen every one of these problems on actual trucks:

1. The Cumminss ISG — EGR and Injectors

The ISG is a good engine, but it doesn't like bad diesel. If the previous owner ran cheap fuel, the EGR clogs and injectors fail. Look for white smoke at idle (injectors), check engine light (EGR), rough idle that clears up above 1000 RPM.

Injector set: $400–$800. Budget for it on high-mileage trucks.

2. Gearbox — ZF vs Fast

ZF gearboxes are excellent when serviced. If neglected, gear engagement gets notchy. Test drive through every gear. Grinding into 3rd or 4th means worn synchros — $600–$1,000 to rebuild.

Fast gearboxes are simpler and cheaper to fix. Not as smooth, but less expensive when something breaks.

3. Cab Tilt Hydraulics

FOTON cabs tilt forward for engine access. The hydraulic pump leaks over time. If the cab won't stay up or there's oil around the pump, that's $200–$300 to fix. Use it to negotiate.

4. Chassis Rust

FOTON's home base is Beijing — cold climate, salted roads. Check the rear crossmember and spring hangers. Tap with a hammer. Solid sounds solid. Dull thud means rot. Don't buy.

5. DPF / SCR (2020+ models)

Newer trucks have emissions systems that clog if the truck only did short runs. Forced regen: $100–$200. New DPF: $800–$1,500. Check if the regen light is on.

Shipping & Total Cost

Forland/Ollin: Fits in a 20ft container, $800–$1,500.

Auman GTL/EST: RORO only, $1,000–$1,800.

Routes:

  • Tianjin → Lagos: 25–30 days, RORO ~$1,200–$1,600
  • Tianjin → Mombasa: 22–28 days, ~$1,000–$1,400
  • Tianjin → Tema: 30–35 days, ~$1,200–$1,600

Real example — 2019 Auman GTL tractor to Lagos:

Item Cost (USD)
Truck CIF Lagos $16,500
Port + clearing $500–$900
Import duty (~35% in Nigeria) ~$5,775
Local transport $200–$400
Total ~$23,000–$24,000

Same year HOWO 375: ~$25,000–$27,000 landed. With FOTON, you save $2,000–$3,000.

Where to Buy

Alibaba has FOTON listings. Some are legit. Some are repainted junk with rolled-back odometers. You can't tell from photos.

A good exporter shows you the physical truck, reads the engine tag, runs a diagnostic, and sends a cold-start video. That's the minimum.

Here's how to find someone you can trust.

FAQ

Are FOTON trucks reliable?

Yes — the Cumminss engines help a lot. The chassis is well-built. Electronics can be fussy on older models (2015–2017), but post-2018 is much better.

Where do I get parts?

Lagos (Ikeja, Ladipo), Accra (Abossey Okai), Nairobi (Industrial Area), Johannesburg (official FOTON dealers). For uncommon parts, we ship from China in 7–10 days.

Do they really use Cumminss engines?

Yes. Most Auman trucks use Cumminss ISG, ISLe, or X12 engines built under license. Genuine Cumminss designs with Cumminss fuel systems. The light trucks use Cumminss ISF engines.

What about resale value?

HOWO holds value better, that's just reality. But FOTON is catching up as the brand gets more established. If you keep the truck 3–5 years, you'll take a slightly bigger hit with FOTON.

Can I video inspect?

Yes. Live WhatsApp call — start the engine, check the cab, inspect the chassis. We can run diagnostics too if you want.
