Used HOWO Tipper Trucks for Sale — Complete 2026 Buyer’s Guide (Models, Prices & Inspection)

Every week, buyers from Nigeria, Kenya, and Tanzania ask us the same question: which used HOWO tipper truck should I buy? The answer is never just a model number. Instead, it depends on what you haul, where you run, and your budget. This guide is based on the trucks we have actually sold and shipped since 2015, not on brochure specs. We cover the real models, real 2026 prices, and the inspection points that actually matter on a second-hand tipper.

What Is a HOWO Tipper Truck?

A HOWO tipper (also called a dump truck) is a heavy truck with a hydraulic lifting body, built by Sinotruk — China’s largest heavy truck maker. The body tilts up to dump sand, gravel, ore or construction waste in seconds. In Africa, HOWO tippers dominate mine sites, sand depots and road projects. The parts network is the strongest of any Chinese brand. If you are searching for a used HOWO tipper truck for sale, this guide is built from real export deals, not spec sheets.

The names “tipper” and “dump truck” mean the same thing. In West Africa, you mostly hear “tipper,” in East Africa “dump truck.” We use both here so this guide matches the way buyers actually search.

HOWO 380 8×4 Tipper

The heavy-duty choice for mining and overburden. Four axles spread the load, payload jumps to 40-50 tons, and the D10.38 engine gives 380 HP. This is the truck for open-pit mines in Ghana, Tanzania, and Zambia. Typical units are 2018-2021 with 70,000-130,000 km.

One honest note: the cheapest unit is rarely the cheapest in the end, however. A $10,000 2016 tipper with 180,000 km will need more repairs than a $14,000 2019 unit. We grade every truck A/A+/A++ and show you the real condition on video before you pay.

HOWO Tipper vs Shacman vs FAW: What Buyers Should Know

If you are comparing brands, the short version is this: HOWO has the best parts supply and resale value in Nigeria, Shacman is stronger in mining regions like Zambia and DRC, and FAW offers the lowest price with a thinner parts network. For a full comparison, see our Chinese truck brand comparison guide.

What to Check Before Buying a Used HOWO Tipper

These are the five things we check on every tipper in our yard, and you should too:

  • Hydraulics: run the body up and down twice. A slow or jerky lift means the pump or cylinder is tired — that is a $500-$1,500 repair.
  • Frame: tippers flex when loaded. Look at the frame rails behind the cab for cracks and repair welds, especially on 8×4 units.
  • Engine cold start: a WD615 should start clean when cold. Blue smoke at start means valve or ring wear, whereas white smoke points to injector issues.
  • Gearbox: test every gear on a short drive. The HW19710 is tough, but a crunching 2nd gear means syncro wear.
  • Body and tailgate: check for rust-through in the floor and hinge wear on the tailgate — these get hammered in daily use.

Shipping and Import: What It Costs to Land a HOWO Tipper

Most HOWO tippers ship RORO from Tianjin or Shanghai. To Lagos, the voyage takes 20-25 days; to Mombasa or Dar es Salaam, it takes 25-35 days. Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a used HOWO tipper in 2026?

FOB China prices start around $11,000 for a 2016 6×4 and go up to $22,000 for a 2021-2023 8×4. Landed cost in Lagos is roughly 25-35% higher with duty and clearing.

Is a HOWO 371 tipper good for mining?

Yes, for medium mining work. The 371 6×4 handles 25-30 tons and remains the most common tipper in African mines. For heavy open-pit overburden, step up to the 380 8×4.

What is the difference betweena 6×4 and an 8×4 tipper?

6×4 has three axles (one front, two drive) and carries 25-30 tons. 8×4 has four axles and carries 40-50 tons with better stability on rough ground — but costs more and uses more fuel.

Can I inspect the tipper before paying?

Yes, always. We also do live video inspection via WhatsApp. You see the actual truck, watch the hydraulics work, and hear the engine run. And third-party inspection is welcome too.

Which HOWO tipper holds resale value best?

The 371 6×4 holds value best in Nigeria and Ghana because parts and demand are highest. Meanwhile, the 380 8×4 holds value in mining countries like Zambia and Tanzania.
